Countertop Education: 5 Common Quartz Questions

September 29, 2014 Blog 0 Comment

For a long time granite has been the go-to surface for high end kitchens and baths, but there’s a new product in town.  Quartz is slowly gaining on granite in popularity and for good reason.  A man-made surface hard enough to resist scratches, stains, and spills, Quartz is popping up all over the place.  Below we’ll answer five of the most common questions about Quartz.

1. What is quartz made of?

Unlike granite and marble, natural stone slabs, quartz countertops are engineered.  Primarily comprised of ground natural quartz they are held together with polymer resins resulting in an amazingly durable surface with many color and design options.

2. Quartz or granite,  which is better?

Engineered quartz is inherently nonporous, so it is resistant to stains, scratches and is even 99.9 percent bacteria free.  Quartz can also withstand impacts, unlike granite, which will crack under the pressure of a hard blow.

3. What kind of design options does quartz offer?

It doesn’t matter what your style is, quartz has an answer for you.  Whether you like the more traditional route or a more modern and eclectic look quartz offers colors to suit every project.  Some quartz even contain small amounts of recycled glass or metallic flecks.

4. Where is quartz best used?

Kitchen, bath, or laundry room countertops, fireplace surrounds and even outdoor kitchens, the superior durability that quartz offers makes it ideal for any of these uses.

5. How is quartz maintained?

Other than regular day-to-day cleaning no maintenance is required.  Unlike many 100% natural stone products, quartz does not need to be sealed or waxed on a regular basis.
